Artist's Comments

sent this to me about four weeks ago in response to my request for people to give me things to color. This is his original character, Impi. Reminds me of a Digimon of some sort. :) Had a friend tell me that it made them think of Flamedramon in a cosplay. :giggle:

I didn't color this for four weeks. I worked on it off and on in between the umpteen bajillion meetings I've had at night and wound up took a break for just over a week towards the end. That trench coat had me twitching!

When I originally started, I went with darker colors, thinking they'd match the whole setting that BTVS and similar shows have set for 'Slaying'. Dark, dreary, everyone wore black. Then I started thinking - didn't the good guys used to be the ones in white? The nice bright, easy to see colors? Sooo, I made Impi a throw back to those times when you could tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys at a glance.

I tried some new things with this. I'm mostly happy with the finished product. At some point I may drop a background in but for right now the gradient will do nicely. I wasn't entirely happy with how the glint on the sword turned out. For some reason it turned parts of him a shade of red! That and he sprouted a 5'o clock shadow. :O_o:

If you like anime-style art, you should give Cal a looksie. He's got a wellspring of talent just waiting to bust loose. :)

Hmm.... Wonderful! ^_^

I especially love the blade: the light reflection on it and the highlights! ^_^ *bounces about* The shadow looks really good and the attention to details is stunning!

I am still trying to get over the Digimon resemblence. The mental debate of whether it is a good thing or not is still raging and I have a feeling it is not likely to end anything soon. Still, I think I will take it as a compliment till my mind makes up its mind.

And I don't think I've got talent. Really. Period. No way! *throws claws up in protest* I'm not good enough! *hides gallery*

I think you did an awesome job coloring as always. :) As well, as the artist did a wonderous drawing. I'm definitely gonna check him out when I get a chance.

Chuuu! ::puffles and hugs:: I think it looks great. The text with the outline is nice. The sword looks great with the lil gleam. ^_^ I envy the Cuile. ::stuffs pocky in his mouth and purrs::

 =D Thank you! I figured I would try a few things I haven't shown before by doing the drop shadows. *puff* I didn't use filters either!

*dances around* I'm so happy people are liking this. I soooo wasn't sure!

>.> Why envy me? *spins in place, munching his treats* o.o *pounce, hugs again* What'd I do?

Thank you, sweetheart. :) *bows* I missed this part of my life. Hadn't been able to do a graphic in months! *twitch* I've been so busy!!

 Thank you. :D

I thought you'd get a kick out of some of the 'extras' I put in. They're tricks I learned way back when I first started doing graphics and then completely forgot to use. LOL *feline urge to bat at him as he bounces, sits on hand* ^^; Attention to detail? *head tilt*

I think it less of a Digimon resemblance and more of a resemblance to modern 'kid' anime. I'm going to show my ignorance of artists in anime today... But if you look at the Digimon style and the Pokemon style, they're almost exact. Yugioh's the same. It's just an in style of drawing right now. From what I've heard said about your art that I've secretly been passing around to my friends, majority opinion likes that style. ;)

*nudges, grins* Your stuff cleans up nicely, you know. If you could just keep those sketches out of the ink bottle! :giggle: You have talent. *threatens with a rolled up newspaper* Repeat after me, 'I have talent.' lol

I like how you did it, so I am going to try and figure them out ^_^ They're really good tricks to know, I think. *notices hand-sitting and bounces more*

Yes, you do have attention to detail ^_^ Don't deny it.

Wel... *feels embarrassed* I don't know any anime artists, and I am out of touch with the current anime as well. If my style is an 'in' style, do you think it will become an 'out' style? *grins and bounces onto wall, latching there*

You sure? I spend a lot of time trying to clean it up. ^_^ Hmm... ink bottles are fun ^_^

*bites newspaper* Mhhmmph, mrrph, mPH!

*taps his chin* Well, I could just make it easy and tell you. Then again, where's the challenge in making you explore? Do you have Photoshop? If you do, some of the effects would be easy to figure. *bats at with the other hand, twitching* XD

I don't -quite- deny it. I just don't see it in this. lol

I don't know many mainstream artists myself. I have met a few at various 'Cons and all but that's about it. All my favorite artists I found on here. Check out and her artwork. *worshipping look* I love my Thai thai and her artwork. also does some pretty kick ass line art. has work I like as well. Where Thai's rounded and more anime-ish, she is more angular and sharp. Makes for a nice contrast. has a kind of 'gritty' style of drawing. She does a lot of sketches and then colors them. does truly amazing color jobs and dolls. You'll see a lot of Thai's line art showing up in her gallery in a fully colored splendor. If you want good examples of 'polished' art, meaning all spiffy in the line art and colored, check out these people: , , and . Thai, Tacet, Nanashi, and Bunny all have polished work as well. I just like to go to certain galleries for certain things. *laughs* Consider it my artistic buffet. :) Give them all a look, you won't be disappointed!! Really, just go through the people I have listed in my friends list or those from my favorites and you'll see a wide variety of very talented artists.

I think you should look around. Use Google or one of the other search engines and look up samples of today's modern anime styles. I gave you the names of what's popular on TV over here for the Saturday morning cartoon line-up. Of course you also have Inuyasha, Samurai Champloo, Full Metal Alchemist and a bajillion others that are on the more adult runs of anime. Take a look around. See what you can find. Maybe you'll like a style so much you will experiment. :) As for going out of style I don't think so. I still see anime drawn in the 80s style. Y'know, the one where everyone had some really HUGE facial feature, great big eyes, arms and feet that were thick at the ends and tapered in thinner closer to the body. Astro-boy style. There will always be people who like a specific style of drawing and so they'll work towards keeping that style alive. *gets a fly swatter. Thinks again and gets the spray bottle. Squirts him a few times* Down! Bad Cal!

What sort of eraser do you use when you 'clean'? There'll always be those stray lines that you can't see until you scan. That I know from experience. Still, there are ways to reduce the number of them. *thinks* I didn't notice much smudging when I was working on Impi so you've got points for that. I'd say my biggest tip for you, besides reducing the amount of 'stray' lines, is work on consistent line thickness. I know that probably means sharpening your pencil about once every four strokes, but you'll see a difference. *shrug* Also one of those 'gum' erasers and there is a great 'white' eraser. I have one at home somewhere but I can't remember what it is called. It does wonders. I've used it to erase pen. lol *facepalms* No ink bottles! *laughs at the image of having him walking around with plastic bags tied to his feet and hands to keep him clean* Hehehe.

*whips the paper around a few times and then starts to shake it* o.o Don't make me get the hose out. *snicker*

Yes, I do have Photoshop. Thing is, I don't really know the program very well. ^_^ Still, that just means it is a novelty to play with. *gets batted* O.o

Okay... I think I'll check them out. Soon. *overawed*

I guess you're right about the style bit. I'll probably get an evolving style after a while, but I think I'll stay with my style for the time being. *jumps onto the Dragyn and clings there, dripping onto him*

When I do my sketches, I have a lot of very light lines that go everywhere. After finalising my sketch, I trace it out with a much darker line and gently erase those unwanted. Plus, most of the stray lines go away when I fiddle with the contrast after scanning. Still, it's those persistent lines that get me. *whines*

Maybe I will do as you suggest and get a better eraser. The ones I use are generally of an unknown brand and make. I -think- they are rubber.

*chews paper to bits and swalows it* o.O *feels queasy*
